To Remain Unconnected probes the regional context of Salt Spring Island, BC, where back-to-the-land lifeways have been impelled to adapt to increasing tourism and real estate speculation. Made up of interviews with lifelong residents and visits to communal farms, craft studios, and islanders' homes, this work scrutinizes the varied ideals which have motivated westward settler-colonialism (in its more marginal forms) in recent history, and into the present. Centered on the Island’s prominent DIY culture, self-built architecture and craft economies, To Remain Unconnected examines the external pressures acting on a community which prides itself on its sovereignty.
